The Gift of Giving

He loved to give. His gifts were not often big or expensive. He would shop for little things- mini-flashlights, pens, notebooks, calculators, pill organizers or candy. He would recall a friend, family member or child who he thought might need this gift. He would say, "Even if they don't, they'll know that I remembered and I cared." He never went to meet anyone he knew without a gift in hand. He also gave quietly to community organizations and needy families just because he saw the need. He loved the saying, "Manava Sewa, Madhava Sewa." (Service to man is service to God.) Every birthday or anniversary in the family was celebrated by him with a donation to a community organization serving the poor and the needy. The best part was that this matter-of-fact man gave with no expectations of appreciation or applause. The biggest gift he gave us was to always be present for us, stay involved in our lives, care for our little joys and sorrows, and guide us with advice that came out of years of living a full life. In doing so, he himself became a priceless gift to those who knew him.
